ON THE TELEVISUAL "EXPERIENCE"
A lotta people, especially these days, like to brag that they don’t watch TV. They say not only is it a waste of time but it is an evil, advertising, brain-cell killing, propaganda box.
These New Age, self-righteous folks are really, mostly just being pretentious. And I understand, pretentiousness can be fun! (Which, incidentally, is my epitaph).
But I owe a lot of my knowledge and talent to television as an enriching, educational, entertaining medium. I am not a passive viewer. I literally take notes. Leaving that screen on is a portal to another universe—albeit a controlled, constructed, often manipulative one.
But it informs my creative process, if nothing else.
